About Us
We are University Staff United, AFSCME Local 171
AFSCME Local 171 organizes University staff at the University of Wisconsin Madison and Universities of Wisconsin Administration. We are individuals who care about our co-workers and their communities. People standing together to say,
"All people deserve to make a living wage, have affordable health care, and a secure retirement.”
Our working conditions are students' learning and living conditions. We provide the assets and environment to facilitate the discovery of new treatments for cancer, understand the formation of stars, or how society can overcome inequality. We do work that often goes unnoticed: cooking the meals, washing the windows, taking out the trash, shoveling the snow, organizing events, setting up appointments, maintaining payroll, scheduling classes, and much much more.
Our work is vital to keeping this University a thriving institution. Our efforts are for the betterment of everyone. We negotiate better working conditions. We represent those who feel unjustly treated.
We, Local 171, are one of many locals in Council 32 which unites all AFSCME locals in the state, representing state, UW, county, and municipal employees.
We are AFSCME, join us.
