PANDEMICS DON'T MAKE US ESSENTIAL, OUR LABOR DOES.
AFSCME MEMBERS DESERVE THE VOICE AND TOOLS NECESSARY TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE, HEALTHY, AND STABLE.
Jacob Powers is a parking enforcement officer for the City of Madison and he is an essential worker.
As a parking enforcement officer, Jacob frequently assists community members with their concerns, even if they aren't related to parking. Jacob's position makes him accessible to the community and he belives in the principle that parking enforcement officers are community ambassadors. His work frees up police officers so that they can attend to emergency safety concerns.
In his own words: "We deal with abandoned cars and other parking related safety issues. We're expected to remain visible as a part of the community. We get flagged down by the public for a variety of questions, not related to parking at all. We are expected to respond professionally and provide people with the information they need even if we don't know it.
Our work is work police officers would have to do if we weren't here. We are essential to the police department and the city. We help people get to work and come home quickly and safely. We clear the way."
Jacob's service helps keep Madison safe and productive. As a community liason, Jacob deserves a seat at the table and a strong voice in the workplace to advocate for his working conditions and benefits.
