PANDEMICS DON'T MAKE US ESSENTIAL, OUR LABOR DOES.
AFSCME MEMBERS DESERVE THE VOICE AND TOOLS NECESSARY TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE, HEALTHY, AND STABLE.
Taunya Thomas is a disability services coordinator and an essential public safety worker!
Taunya is a member of AFSCME Local 645. She works for Milwaukee County Disabilities Services. Because of her work, marginalized community members receive care and support, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when routines are upended.
In her own words: "This virus has taught us to lift the veil on essential workers...it's very important to know that just as much as we all hate being confined at home, we know that abuse and neglect picks up. We have to come in with our capes on and go into homes and rescue people from those situations. We know that people have to hold on until we get there. There are essential workers every where. This teaches society that no one is unessential."
Taunya knows that having the support and voice to advocate for those doing essential work, really matters, that's why she's an AFSCME member. Even during a pandemic, she's doing work to keep our community safe. She deserves the resources to be able to keep doing so.
