Why Join?

  • Do you want to build a better and more secure economic future for you and your family?
  • Are you hurting from a lack of quality, affordable healthcare coverage?
  • Have you ever been unfairly disciplined by your supervisor or forced to accept a demotion, suspension or other punishment you didn’t deserve?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to consider getting active in YOUR UNION at MMSD, Local 60 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees! AFSCME!

We are the union that has represented custodial, food service, drivers, and grounds workers at MMSD for the past 80 years! Our leaders are elected by our members and do the same work you do for MMSD every day. We have the experience and shared interest to ensure YOUR VOICE is heard by management, administrators, and the Board of Education.

We constantly fight for and secure the best wages, benefits, and working conditions possible for our members. Since so much of public service workers’ rights, benefits, and funding are impacted by the actions of elected officials, we also maintain a strong presence in the corridors of government, fighting to protect our members and holding politicians accountable for their actions.

We are always looking for coworkers at MMSD willing to step up, learn to defend their coworkers, and organize workers' power on the job.

AFSCME Local 60 is a member union of Council 32, our statewide coalition, which is, in turn, part of AFSCME International. With more than 1.6 million active and retired members nationwide, AFSCME is the country's strongest and most respected public services union.

Get in touch with us to learn more about YOUR UNION and how we can make it stronger, standing together. All conversations are strictly confidential, and you will not be pressured to move forward until you are ready.

(A note on terminology: Currently, AFSCME Local 60 is referred to at MMSD as an “Employee Association.” We made these changes after Act 10 was passed in 2011 so that we could continue legally working with the MMSD Administration toward protecting our wages and working conditions. We look forward to the day Act 10 is overturned – which we expect to happen soon – but until then, we will continue as we always have: by standing together and fighting back when things get tough.)

In solidarity!
